Delivering a Birthday Cake to My Daughter in a Distant City, I Listen to Thomas Quasthoff Perform “Der Leiermann” from Winterreise

Erin Wilson

Pushing towards a state of grace.

Sour body, let me forget your barbs, your hooks.

Daughter, fresh life, you are the garden

I am leaving and going to.

Trees, multifarious shades of green,

throng. Break into German lieder.

The black horse  glazed in rain

shies  unmoving  in a luminous field.

Like the birch tree,

I do not belong with humans.

Not knowing German,

I try to outrun myself.

To exceed. To exceed. I want to break

into ten thousand blades of light.

I want to forgive myself.

And be forgiven.

I want to eat the salt of this world.

And think about it.

A grey gull rises into the pregnant sky.

Becomes the whitest gull ever.

The marrow of our bones

is an inwardly opening flower, a white fruit.

When mind opens,

so too, two sets of lips.

Highway, carry on

as you carry me.

Give over to direction.

Surrender! Enter the music!

How am I still a noun?

Was I ever?

Higher! Higher!

Great everything, my arms are yours!
